Bio-Individuality

Bio-Individuality is an empowering concept that you should become more familiar with. The roots of this ‘philosophy’ go back to a mid-century scientist, Roger Williams. In his book, Biochemical Individuality, Williams explains a basic principle of nutrition that was sorely overlooked: no one diet works for everyone. He said genetics gives us different cell structure, anatomy, and metabolism than anyone else in the world. Therefore, an individual is genetically determined to have highly individualistic nutrition requirements. . . Fast-forward to the new millennium.
- Booksellers see a never ending stream of diet books hitting the shelves.
- Each dietary theory scientifically proves itself (and disproves it’s competitors).
- Each fad diet has hundreds of test subjects who, apparently, have also proven that it works.
How can this be? Isn’t there anyone else out there who has tried multiple diets and failed? How can they all be right when, so far, the ones we try have all been wrong?
It is clear that we still don’t understand how liberating bio-individuality can be! You are not required to follow anyone else’s prescription for eating. You are free to find out what gets you the results you want in your own body. You are your own dietary scientist. And you are your one-and-only test subject. That’s Bio-Individuality! But you’re not alone.
Once you break from the mainstream,
- pause quietly,
- take a deep breath, and
- notice the basics: people eat according to their need.
A book doesn’t have to tell us that men eat differently than women; someone’s eating habits on the night shift are different than a day shift; or the old eat differently than the young. A good place to start assessing your own needs is to ask yourself, “Who am I? What in my life makes me feel good,” and, “Where do I want to see myself going?”
The second step toward bio-individuality is listening to your own body. With the answers to the above questions, you’ll know where you’re going, and in turn, you’ll find out what kind of fuel you need for the journey.
Listening to your own body’s needs is not so easy in our fast-paced & noisy world. It is likely that we do not even speak our own body’s language any longer. Years of absorbing advertising messages and processed foods have disconnected us from what is real. If you need help reconnecting, a health counselor is trained to help you spot all the messages your body is trying to send. From your blood type, to your metabolic rates, your genetic background, and more, a health counselor can give you a full hour consultation, free of charge, to determine how to help you achieve your own personal best health based on bio-individuality.
